The River Police is the official field organ of the fish management and is subjected administratively and operationally under The Tana River Fish Management. Supervising Officers are engaged for the whole of, or part of the fishing season, and their assignment is to ensure that the provisions in the fishing regulations are complied with.

The overall role of supervision is to protect the Tana River environmental values and to prevent environmental crime. The monitoring consists of patrolling the watercourses, checking fishing licenses, provide guidance and information, carry out management, maintenance and preparation and conduct registration. At the national border stretch, the supervision service is preformed in cooperation with the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate and the official Finnish supervision.
